Thomas Family: I believe Henry Clay Thomas was a brother of my 2nd great grandfather Harvey Clinton Thomas.
Harvey Clinton Thomas was a son of James Alvin Thomas and Mary Ann Baldwin,
you can find them in Lee co. Virginia 1850 census living next to Mary Ann Baldwin's parents John M Baldwin and Elizabeth Seals
you can next find our Thomas's in Claiborne co. Tennessee in the 1860 census james Alvin Thomas was a Union soldier in the Civil War he died from sickness and Mary Ann Baldwin married
a man last name Orton you can find the families all together
with your Brown's in Laurel Co. Kentucky on the 1870 Census.
also John Brown's wife who was a Dees was related to Harvey Clinton Thomas's wife Elizabeth Jane Gill (her mother was a Dees)
your cousin

The Corn Cob: This story was told to me by my Uncle,Dr.Mike Thomas.
James Alvin Thomas was a Union Civil War Soldier, and supposedly
his unit was camped near his home in Claiborne Co.Tn.,and he
got permission to go home and have supper with the family.
well the home guards got word that he was there, and came to get
him. someone alerted him and he took off out the back door,
as they came to the front.
they were having corn on the cob with their supper that evening.
James Alvin took an ear with him when he left.
and when James's wife Mary Ann Baldwin Thomas was asked where he was, she replied "the last I saw of him he had a cob in his hand" well the home guards quickly surrounded the out house,
waiting for James Alvin Thomas to come out.
giving him time to make his escape.
(but she didn't Lie)
Note: our family did use corn cobs to wipe with.

Hitching a Ride: This story told to me by my Grandfather Dewey Lee Thomas 1908-2003
Harvey Clinton Thomas was my grandpa's grandpa.
he was born in Rose Hill Lee co.Virginia, the family moved to Claiborne co. Tennessee when he was a young boy.
during the civil war,the family moved to Laurel Co.Ky
well they still had family in Claiborne Co.Tn. and Harvey and his brothers would go back to visit.
well they only had one horse,so they would take turns.
one would ride a mile or so and get off and tie the horse off,
to a tree and continue walking and the one that had been walking,
would then pick it up and ride on up past the other, and so on.
Grandpa said they called it hitching a ride.

Henry Clay Thomas Date Of Death: We know he was alive at least around June 1892 as that was roughly nine months before his last child, Susan Ann Thomas was born on Feb. 26, 1893. So he died no later than June 1892 and not after March 11, 1904.. His wife Martha Jane Brown filed for a pension from the government on March 11, 1904.
