Death about one o'clock this morning at the local hospital removed from the Martinsville community, one of its most lovable characters, Mrs. John E. Redd, prominent local resident, church and club leader succumbing after an extended illness.
The deceased who was the widow of a prominent Martinsville tobacconist and business leader, had been in declining health for the past year, her condition growing serious during the past week.
An operation was performed earlier this week in an effort to save her life, without success.
The deceased, a native of Halifax County, Va. was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Barksdale, and moved with her family to Martinsville about 22 years ago to make her home.
Her husband engaged in the tobacco warehouse business.
Mr. Redd passed away several years ago.
A member of Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church, she was also active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Book club.
Funeral services will be held from Anderson Memorial Presbyterian Church Saturday afternoon.
Burial will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery.

Redd of Birmingham, Ala.; Mrs. Henry D. Whittle of this city; Mrs. Sallie Redd of Washington,D.C., Miss Ruth Redd of Richmond, Va. and Miss Nellie Redd of this city.
