- Census and other records reveal that Theophilus’s father’s name was Alexander F. Brown, and the records show that he was born in VA in 1807. There are family stories of the Browns coming from NC; so, Alexander may have been in that state for a while. It is, however, clear that Alexander was in Bedford County, TN by at least 1830, because he appears in the census records for that year. He appears in Chancery Court (a civil court) records until 1838. In a lawsuit in 1832, a Charles Brown is mentioned. In another lawsuit in 1832, Alexander was a co-defendant with a C. H. Brown. The Browns lost, but the connection with C. H. Brown is significant in tying Alexander with the Bedford County, VA Browns. There were numerous Browns in Bedford County, TN in those years, most coming from VA and many coming from Bedford County, VA. Alexander appeared in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Calloway County, KY but did not appear in any records I could find after that. The 1850 census shows Alexander F. Brown as a 43 year old farmer born in VA. In his household were, one female, “M” (Mary), 42, born in VA; one male, “T” (Theophilus), 15, born in TN; one female, “P,” 12, born in TN; one male, “W,” 7; one female, “N” (Nancy), 6; and one male, “J. M.” (possibly, James Madison), 2.
