Notes |
- Joseph Clark received his Land Grant Certificate #383 in Grayson Co. on April 23, 1850. That is the exact same day Benjamin Brewster received his Land Grant Certificate #387. (Note that there are only three certificates issued between them.) Also, note that Jones Bishop signed both Benjamin and Joseph’s application certifying that they are a qualified settler in the Peters Colony. The other person signing Joseph’s application was John P. Bailey. He applied for a Certificate, (I do not know the number), but he Patented a Certificate in Johnson Co., just south of Ft. Worth, (Tarrant Co.) On the 1860 Census of Johnson Co., John P. Bailey is listed as Hotel Keeper living in the town of Bucanan. Bucanan was the original County Seat of Johnson Co. and was located on 60 acres of land donated by the one and only, John P. Bailey. After reorganization of county lines about 1867, Cleburn was designated as the County seat of Johnson Co. and now there is only a cemetery at Bucanan.
It would appear to me that there is certainly a preponderance of evidence to indicate that there was a close enough relationship between Benjamin Brewster and Joseph Clark to believe that they were in fact, brothers-in-law. They both arrived in Texas the same time, they lived together or very near for some time and both left Grayson Co. about the same time and moved east to Wood Co/Upsher Co. about the same time. In my genealogy records I am going to enter the name of M.J. Brewster as the maiden name of the wife of Joseph Clark and the mother of Benjamin Franklin and Isom Jackson Clark. (Research by Keith Reed)
I have seen her maiden name also listed as Brusette.
