- This man is only linked as a father to John for research purposes! I have linked him here because of the daughter named Peninah. There is absolutely NO PROOF that this is John's father!
He is listed as a brother to our Thomas in the Pettigrew manuscript. A letter from J. E. SORRELLS (son of our Thomas) to Mrs. Pettigrew (Pettigrew Manuscript Pine Bluff, AR) dated 1906, Petersburg, Lincoln Co., TN "I was born in Bedford Co., TN., 1833, my father's name was Thomas SORRELLS, he had a brother Edward. There is a large family of SORRELLS in West Tennessee, at Dyersburg, James Newton Sorrells in one of them, as far as I know they are related to us."
There is an Edward SORRELL in the 1790 Census of Cumberland Co., NC Fayetteville District, Not Fayetteville Township:
1 male age 16 & up
5 females including head of family
(But he is too old!)
1 female born 1794-1810 (age 10-16) (Millia) (Rhoda married in 1816)
"It is generally agreed among Hale/Hail/Haile researchers that Mead HAIL was born in VA in 1774+-. His death in Bedford Co, TN., in Sep 1850 is documented in the Chancery Court Records of that county . Due to the cooperation of many researchers of this line an abundance of information is available.
There is some confusion about the name of Mead's wife. Some say she was ELIZABETH "Betsy" JACKSON because a marriage bond for Mead Hail and Betsy Jackson dated Mar 7, 1796, has been located in Bedford Co, VA. Others say his wife was MARY because Mead and Mary Hail are found on the Bedford Co, TN, census that was enumerated on the 28th day of August 1850. Still others say Betsy Jackson and Mary are likely the same person. However, according to the 1850 census Mary was born in 1789+- making her only seven or so years old on the date of the marriage bond.
After Mead Hail moved his family to TN, they lived in the Flat Creek Community of Bedford County. He fathered nine known children: LOCKY HAIL md an unknown SORRELL/SARLS.
