  Fairbury Gazette, Fairbury, Nebraska August 3, 1878 KILLED BY LIGHTNING. During the storm last evening Mrs. Freeman Rice was struck and instantly killed by lightning. She was sitting near the middle of the room when the bolt descended through a stove pipe which projected through the roof, striking her in the head. Dr. Wilcox was at once called but he could detect no signs of life, death being doubtless instantaneous. Her sister-in-law, Mrs. P.C. Rice, who was sitting near her was also severly shocked but not seriously injured. Mrs. Rice has resided in Fairbury for some time and was generally known and universally respected. She left a husband and several children who will deeply feel their loss. Fairbury Cemetery Section 4, Row 13. Minerva Rice Myers (Mrs. Clifford), Monett, Missouri has the original picture of Minerva Jane (Clark) Rice. Minerva said she was given the picture because she was named after her. 1989
