- In all records of Moses, he is never called William. There is a William Nichols about the same age as Moses in 1820 census of Lincoln County, both have different households, you also will not find a William M. Nichols until you see my ancestor who was William M. and I don't know if that M. stands for Moses or Melson, this Georgie would have known my William M. Nichols. (William M. was born 1840).
Another source is Moses Nichols served as a private in William Metcaf and Capt. William Setton's militia infantry in the war of 1812.
The other is William Nichols, not Wm.M, just William who was a private under Col. Cannon and Capt. Hanley and Capt Brandon, 1814 in the militia. These show two different Nichols men. I believe this William is Moses brother.
I have talked to John Foster about this and he agreed that someone is confused, this was a few years ago, when we talked about this. (Information from Gay Nix -warpaint1128@sbcglobal.net)
There is a marriage record in Mercer Co., KY on 20 Dec 1807 for a Green NICHOLS to a Polly McGHINNIS

We have a copy of a report, but it reproduces poorly, so here is what the Tennessee Department of Education said in 1926 in reply to Georgia's request for military records of William Nichols from Tennessee:
"Dear Madam:
According to the records in this office of the soldiers from Tennessee in the War of 1812, the record of William Nichols is as follows:
Nichols, William, private first enlisted on September 24, 1813 in the Mounted Riflemen and served under Colonel Cannon and Capt. Hanley and Capt. Brandon. He enlisted again on June 20, 1814 in the Militia Infantry and served under Colonel Pipkin and Capt. Newlin.
Yours very truly,
