- There is a book that was written about an admired preacher in NC by the name of Smith Ferguson. Numerous children were named Smith Ferguson in his honor. I believe that this is the case with our S. F. Paine.
His daughter, Mary, helped him to write a wonderful Memoir about the family history. You can view it at: http://www.ncgenweb.us/burke/ncbpayne.htm

The Alexander Co., NC Family History book records two accounts of Smith Ferguson's (his namesake) pastorial service. "Little River Baptist Church: In 1841, Smith Furguson was pastor and there were 111 members. In 1847 there was the greatest revival ever recorded in this area; 158 people were baptized. In 1849 the pastor, Smith Ferguson ordained nine ministers". "Three Forks Baptist Church: Rev. Smith Ferguson served one year till 1861."
"Grandfather Smith Fergurson Paine was ordained to the Baptist ministry by Roaring Fork Baptist Church in NC, 9 Aug 1881, and later transferred his membership to Zion's Grove Baptist in Sevier County, TN 17 Dec 1904. He was pastor of several churches, and converted and baptized many people into the faith of his church.
Grandfather was a large man, over 6 feet in height, dark of completion and hair, a big-boned man weighing over 200 pounds. He was of Dutch Hollander and Swiss descent. There were four brothers-his great grandfather was one of them-who emigrated to America. They came to VA and scattered from there. His great-grandfather remaining. Grandfather loved his family and grandchildren. He liked to tease us and when we were small and to hold us on his lap."(Newton B. Clark)
I have several photographs of him. (Sherry S. Finchum)
I have a tin-type picture of this family. (SSF)
Smith Ferguson Paine donated the land to have the Zion Grove Baptist Church built. His son-in-law, Berry Williams Clark donated the timber that was used to build the building.
