- Of Writtle, Essex, England.
In the Visitations of Exxes of 1634, it is shown that the families of SORRELL intermarried with each other, with the Tendring, Aylett, Frank, Conier, Bernard, Little and others. The family seats were at Waltham Magna, Essex (sometimes called Much Waltham) and at Stebbing, Essex.
The Sorrells were Huguenots. They left France about 1544, went to England and were naturalized there about that time (Huguenot Society of London, Vol 8, p.223), therefore they required no naturalization when they came to Virginia a century later. See The Visitation of 1636 of Sorrells of Essex, England. (From "The Rucker Family Genealogy, compiled by Sudie Rucker Wood, Richmond, VA Old Dominion Press, Inc. MCMXXXIII, page 480)
A John, Robert, and Richard Sorel registered at Oxford University between 1273 and 1300. They may have been students from France.
A William Sorrell of England in his will provided for his burial in Boulogne, France. The will gives no family data except that he leaves his lands etc. to a brother, John Sorrell.
