Thomas Sorrel listed as a Private in Blount's Co., NC Regiment in the Revolutionary War: Date of appointment or enlistment 20 Jul 1778 for 9 months. Listed as a casualty: Dead 16 Sep 1778, Vol 6, page 31.

In Bedford County listed as #059: in Middle District of TN, John Shepard is listed as an assignee for the Heirs of Thomas Sorrel 640 acres under Warrant # 2961. (Located this document in TN State Archives Library) This survey located on the south side of the west fork of OBEY's River (now Obey River and Dale Hollow Lake) Note that this survey began at the North East Corner of his former survey.
With Assignee papers: Seale of 320 poles to the ---? Territory South of Ohio Middle District By virtue of a military warrant No 2961 dated the 30 day of Sep 1785 Located the 10th of August 1792 Issued by the Honorable James Glasgow Secretary of State to me directed to have surveyed for John Shepard Assignee of the Heirs of Thomas Sorrell a private in the North Carolina Continental line Six hundred and forty acres of land lying on the south side of the west fork of Obeys river a south branch of Cumberland river Beginning at the North east corner of his former Survey of No 81 thence North 320 poles to a stake thence west 320 poles to a stake thence south 320 poles to a stake thence South 320 poles to a stake thence a straight line to the Begining. (Evidently this land survey was not acceptable to the family and they got another survey for a different land plot. This land is said to be extremely slanted without much flat land in the area.)
Land grant from NC to Thomas Sorrell for his military service performed to the State of NC Warrant No. 2961 dated 30 Sep 1785. The first date on the land grant is 19 Aug 1807. It is for 640 acres. This is considered the minimum amount of land necessary for profitable farming by the people of the time. Then is granted to his heirs on 6 Jan 1809. The land is in Bedford County, TN. (This land grant was located in the TN State Archives Library)
The 1810 Delinquent Tax List of Bedford Co., TN lists the heirs of Thomas Sorrell.
"These is granted by the said state of TN unto the Heirs of the said Thomas Sorrell: A certain tract of Parcel of Land, containing: Six hundred and forty acres by survey bearing date the 6th day of January 1809 lying in Bedford County in the second (Surveyor's) District on the waters of Rich Creek of Duck River section No 5 Range No 2 and counted as follows to wit beginning at a hickory and dogwood and the North Boundary line of said section one hundred poles west of the North East corner of said section running from thence to wit, four hundred and fifty two poles to hickory and Elm thence West forty eight poles crossing a dry Creek, the same course in all two hundred and twenty-six poles to two Elm bushes, thence North four hundred and fifty-two poles to a black oak in the section line, then East with the said line to the Beginning." (Tim Marsh says that this area is now East Marshall just north of Farmington. Near Henry Horton State Park) This is recorded on Sep 1, 1815.
Lincoln Co., TN was created in 1809, from Bedford County,the county was named for General Benjamin Lincoln, a Revolutionary War hero. The chief watercourse of the area is the Elk River. In 1836, the northwest portion of Lincoln County given to form part of Marshall County.
There is also land granted to Needham Sorrell in Lincoln Co. dated 9th Jan 1837.
At this time, I find no paper connection of our family to this land grant Thomas--but it was in Bedford Co., TN.
Deed Recorded in Bedford Co., TN, Book J, page 16: Deed for land of Heirs of Thomas Sorrels grant 640 acres No 7636 signed by Willie Blount "The heirs of Thomas Sorrels are entitled to the within mentioned Tract of Land signed by D. McGavach Register of West Tennessee." Recorded in the Registrar's office of West Tennessee September 15, 1815. signed by D. McGavock Reg Registered the 18th day of August 1818 signed by Edwd Wade Register.
A deed for TN Grant to Archabald Adams, 76 acres. No 3536. Part of Certificate No. 363, dated 21 Nov 1809, obtained by James Adams and Archabald Clinton and entered 31 Jul 1810 by No. 2519. Granted to Archibald Adams, assignee of Archabald Clinton, registered 22 Oct 1814 for land in Bedford County on Rich Creek, called Michael's Creek, is noted to border Thomas Sorrels. The land was surveyed Aug 1810 (Bedford Co. Deed Book E:273).

Montgomery sold Gideon Pillow 487 a for $1,460, on Rich Creek, beginning at Sorrel's E. corner, W 226 poles to his SW corner, N 355 poles to Newson's S line, E pasing his corner 226 poles to his SW corner, N 355 poles to Newson's S line, E passing his corner 226 poles S to the beginning. Another deed 25 Sep 1819, John Allison, Sr. to John Allison, Jr., 153 acres. John Ellison conveyed to his son John Ellison, Jr. land in Bedford Co., TN on waters of Rich Creek. Borders Thomas Sorrells. Wit: Thomas Dryden and Joseph S. Ellison. Reg: 27 Dec 1819. (Page 247, Deed Book L, Bedford Co., TN)
21 Sep 1819 John Allison to his son, Thomas Allison for 140 acres for land on Rich Creek is noted as bordering Jason Thompson and John Null. Witn: Thomas Dryden and Joseph S. Ellison. , and was registered 27 Dec 1819 (Bedford Co. Deed Book L:247). This surname is also listed as (Ellison)
On 18 Aug 1818 heirs of Thomas Sorrels received a Tennessee Grant for 640 acres, # 7636, for military service by Thomas Sorrel to North Carolina, Warrant No. 2961, dated 20 Sep 1785 and entered 19 Aug 1807 by No. 229. Granted to the heirs of Thomas Sorrels, land in Bedford Co., TN, on waters of Rock Creek. Surveyed 6 Jan 1807 (Bedford Co. Deed Bk J: 16).
This Thomas SORREL of the NC Land Grant was the same one as killed in military service on 16 Sep 1778. He enlisted in Pt. Blount's Company NC Regiment 20 Jul 1778 and served 9 months. The military warrant #2961 for 640 acres was issued in the Middle District to the Heirs of Thomas SORREL and surveyed 8 Aug 1792. It was not recorded as a Land Grant until 15 Sep 1815, but it is the same land. The deed is not registered in Bedford Co., TN until 18 Aug 1818.
This land is called Rock Creek in the Bedford Co., TN Deed book. This land granted is currently located in East Marshall County, TN.
