Askew, J.P. per NC marriage fiche. J.J. and Lou are with her parents on the 1860 Madison Co. NC census. In 1850 she and her parents are on the census for Buncombe Co. Madison Co. was formed from Buncombe Co. in 1859.

  They are in Madison Co. on the 1860 census. A Joseph J. Sorrels served in Civil War but I don't think it fits this man. Our Joseph's brothers, Lewis, Wilky, George, Jim and David are also said to have served by different stories. [A John W. was in the 16th in Co. G but I don't know where he fits.] From Joseph's children's birth dates and places, we can determine J. J. and Margaret left North Carolina for Cocke Co TN between 1863 and 1866 and they were there for the 1870 census. [Story on David said he came to Cocke Co. 1 Jan 1866.] Per "Lou's" obit, they moved to Texas in 1870 and arrived at Backbone Valley, Burnet Co. on Christmas Day. Resided there until 1883 when they moved into town of Burnet. Per Patricia Morrow, the Askews, Morrows, Moores and others came to Round Rock, Texas in November of 1871. Some lived a year near Leander in Williamson Co., then moved on to Burnet Co, Texas in freight wagons that operated from Round Rock to Fort Mason. These families settled around Pleasant Valley and Backbone Valley. One person referred to it as Morman Mills, Burnet Co. Land was purchased by J. J. and Lou by April, 1872. Between 22 Nov and 22 Dec 1874, they buried two children and had a new baby. They were joined by or accompanied to Texas by his parents Andrew Mitchell and Sallie Sorrels. We were told by Art Wood in Burnet that the town of Burnet was originally called Hamilton Valley, changed later in honor of David Burnet, first Governor of Texas. J. J. Sorrels, Deacon, officiated at the marriage of J. M. Williams and Arabelle Lacy on 7 Dec 1873 in Burnet Co. TX. I've also seen his name as officiating at weddings from 1874 to 1877 on one film. Per J.J.'s obit he was a member of the Methodist Church since childhood and a member of the Masonic Lodge for 53 years. 1920 Burnet Co TX Census lists him as "Joe J. Sarrels". Walton Sarrels Sr. said he was a lay preacher (same as Deacon?) and rode from church to church in surrounding areas and also that his cattle brand was Triple 6 <666>. I have his death certificate and picture of his tombstone.
