Notes |
- He joined the Confederate forces May 14, 1861 under Capt. Tom Angel with his brother Wilky. They spent several months at Valley Mountain, VA where a terrible epidemic of measles broke out killing more than any two battles in which they fought. In May 1862 they helped defend Richmond fighting large Newfoundland dogs as well as soldiers. Lewis was with General Lee on April 9, 1865 when the white flag was hoisted and he and his fellows formed two long lines which Generals Grant and Lee marched through on the road to Appomattox Courthouse. Lewis heard himself and his fellows declared prisoners of war, but on the following day they were all paroled. General Lee spoke to them, saying "God bless old North Carolina". He was paroled at Appomattox Court House on 9 Apr 1865. Then Lewis and his comrades began the long march home through the war-torn country-side. (He served with NC Troops, Co. H, 16th Regiment) [Story from Paul Sorrels] This family is in the 1880 census for Upper Hiawassee in Towns Co, GA. Both Lewis and Sarah are shown as 41, Mary L. is 12, Robert 9, Andrew 8, Sally 3, Jane 1. Most of these ages do not jibe with their birth dates as we have them. 1900 Macon Co. census has Lewis born Jan 1840 and I believe this might be correct. Fits better for marriages, etc.
Previously had 1836 as birthdate. 1880 and 1900 census seem to point differently. 1900 says born Jan 1840.
Death place per Marshall Styles, says he was buried in Bethel United Methodist Cemetery.
