- There is some confusion on his date of birth: 1900 Madison County NC Census lists his birth date as December 1887 and his age as 12.
When he married Tennie Sams in 1913, his age is listed as age as 22 which would make his birth date about 1891.
When his first child was born in 1914, his age is listed as age as 22, which would make his birth date about 1892.
When his second child was born in 1916, his age is listed as 28, which would make his birth date about 1888.
When his third child was born in 1918, his age is listed as 30, which would make his birth date about 1888.
NC did not routinely keep birth records until after 1913, which caused him problems when he needed to prove his age in order to draw his pension. He had to have someone swear to his age who knew him when he was younger. Because of this there is some confusion as to his actual age. His death record shows him as age 96 when he died in October 1977 which would put his birth date at 1880. vol. 048 cert. 23610
From Dora Davison in a letter to Earlene Davison Giglierano 9-20-1996:
Pappa was supposedly good at witching (dowsing) for water. He used a Y shaped branch of hazelwood I think. He also was quite the dancer and fighter.
