Notes |
- She may be the daughter of James Joel Charles and Sarah Halbert.( Zelpha Charles was old enough in 1794 to make "her mark" on her mother's deed, even though she is listed as a minor.) There is a Zelpha Charles that is a DNA match although many of the descendants are also connected through the Steelman line. Her birthdate is 1755 Cove City, Craven Co., NC.
Based on the names of the children of Isom CLARK's daughter, the evidence indicates that this was very likely their mother. The fact that Joseph named a daughter Zepha also indicates this.
Zelpha Clark is on the Early Taxpayer's list with 240 Acres of Land, Valued at 700 and her tax is listed as $35. Joseph, Benjamin, and Amos are also listed.

Who is the male 50-60?- (Born 1770-1780) Perhaps a Son and Daughter-In-Law
(2 males 15-20 could have been born: 1805-1815)-Probably grandchildren or Jeremiah (He was born
in SC) because I can't find him anywhere in the 1830 Census otherwise.

She is thought to be buried in the CLARK family cemetery. The CLARK Cemetery contains about 40-50 graves marked with fieldstones. No names can be read on the stones. It is located near the Little Pigeon River, about one-half mile west of Red Bank Baptist Church. To reach this cemetery, beginning in Sevierville at the intersection of US 441 and State Route 66, drive on US 411 (toward Newport) for 3.3 miles. Turn right onto Old US 411. Drive 0.6 miles and bear right onto Pittman Center Road. Drive 2.0 miles. The cemetery is on the right, about 400 yards at the top of the hill in a grove of trees.According to records of Jeremiah CLARK in the 1870 and 1880 Census records of Whitfield Co., GA, his mother was born in Ireland.
Some records state that her last name was SCOTT, but it appears that there was a Zelphia SCOTT who did marry a James CLARK. That James was in the 1850 St. Joseph Co., IN Census, 80 years old living with his son Malachi, therefore not our James CLARK.
