  When he was young he went to live with his grandparents. About 7 or 8 he was sent to live with them. Sarah taught him from the Bible and hoped that he would become a preacher. He was sent to school at Maury Academy in his early teens. Some of the Henderson relatives lived in Dandridge and he boarded with them. He rode a horse Monday morning to school and rode back home on Friday after school. Going to and from school, he passed through Sandy Ridge Community two times a week. He noticed the "prettiest girl in the world" and finally got nerve enough to speak to her father. And when he was through at Maury, they married.
