- He came to TN about 1800 from NC. He was 15 years old at the time. He crossed the mountains with his older brother. They settled in what is now Muddy Hollow. The old maps called it Strange Hollow.
I have seen his name as James Alexander Strange, Sr.

James was the 6th child and second son of James Strange, Sr. He was born in NC in 1784 according to the 1870 Census, or in 1787 accd. to the 1850 Census. Another source reported that he was born in Halifax Co., VA, 1787, two years after his grandfather James Strange, the first died.
James married Sarah about 1815 perhaps in Rockingham Co., NC. James Strange was listed in the 1820 Rockingham Co., NC Census, but not there after.
He moved to Union Co., TN, then to Grainger Co., TN abt 1817, then to Jefferson County, TN about 1825
James Strange obtained a Land Grant to 50 acres in Cocke Co., TN in 1824, and was listed in the 1830 Jefferson Co., TN Census. James acquired 200 acres in Jefferson Co., TN in 1832. One James Strange acted as a bondsman in a marriage bond issued to Mariah Dyer and James McCubbin on 18 Aug 1831.
James and his wife were listed as farmers, 65 and 60 years of age, with value-real estate worth $50 and living in Dwelling Number 960 in the Census 23 Oct 1850, 13th District, Jefferson Co., TN. They lived with young daughters with different surnames, believed to have been the orphan children of two of their daughters.
