- Phebe Dickson and her husband, Joseph B. Lackey. Joseph B. Lackey was my 3rd great-grandfather. Phebe was his first wife; she died in August 1860 from "consumption", which is an old-time health term for tuberculosis. Her full name was Phebe Mahala Dickson, and she and Joseph B. had a child named Emily, who was close to 2 years old when Phebe died. They were living at or near Trundles Cross Roads, Sevier County, TN when she died, and she was buried in a cemetery called the Old Keener Grave Yard, which is near the Rocky Springs Academy. From what I have learned, Joseph B. took Emily and left her with Phebe's parents, David and Elizabeth, and then enlisted in the Civil War. (David and Elizabeth were living near Phebe and Joseph B.) After the war, Joseph B. married Dorcas Ann Rogers and had eight children. My family descends from this 2nd marriage of Joseph B.'s. I have located Emily in the 1880 Greene County, TN census, living with John Dickson, age 23. Emily has a son, age 3, named Samuel Lackey; Samuel is listed as John Dickson's stepson. Emily and John are found in the 1910 and 1920 census again, married and with children of their own. I am still searching for Samuel Lackey and what happened to him. I don't know if you have any information in your files that might be of help to me, and I hope this information will be of help to you. Please drop me a note and let me know if you have any questions..... Willobe2000@att.net (2004)
From the Pension Records of Joseph B. Lackey and his 2nd wife, Dorcas, I have discovered that Phebe and Joseph B. were living near Trundles Cross Roads in Sevier County, TN at the time of her death. Apparently she died from consumption, which I understand means tuberculosis now. She was buried in the Old Keener Graveyard near Trundles Cross Roads; from the pension records, her brother, William Dickson, states that he got there too late for the funeral service, but did see her grave. It had a "paling" placed all around it, but no headstone.
There is another person in the pension papers who knew Phebe and Joseph B. His name is William C. Chandler. He was 63 years old and living at Knoxville, TN...states his occupation was Attorney. He states that Phebe was his wife's mother's full sister. He says that his wife's mother's name was Fiza and that she is now dead (this was on 22 April 1912). He states that he was born and raised 250 yards from the grave of Phebe Dickson Lackey. Some of the things he states in the affidavit are "Phebe lived in the place of Harve Keener or near there, when she died...... Phebe was buried at the cemetery near the Rocky Springs Academy... a paling was placed around her grave, no stone on her grave..... the cemetery was part originally of our old farm..... heard that Phebe died of consumption; nearly all the family died of it.... William Dickson, brother of Phebe, his daughter married Henry Cutshaw and lives one mile from Greenville".
I'm still searching for the family that took Emily in.... she was apparently 1-2 years old when her mother died. In these same pension records, I found an affidavit from James M. Rogers, the brother of Dorcas Rogers Lackey. It states "Joseph was married first to Phebe Dixon. she and her father came with Lackey from Greene Co, TN. Phebe became sick and died".
There is another person named Catherine Davis, wife of George Davis, who she states is a relative of Dorcas.... she states:
"Phebe and Joseph were living near Greenville; Phebe was very weakley then and they said she had consumption.... heard she was dead and remembered her because she looked so poorly.... I thought she was the worst looking person I ever saw going about...... Lackey brought their little girl and stayed with her (Phebe's) father and mother prior of the time before he enlisted (in the war)".
