Notes |
- From Floyd H. Lawson, November 1998:
Uncle William Paul Ingle, son of Robert M. Ingle and Margaret Elizabeth Herndon, was a Minister of the Gospel, and most of my life was Pastor of Old Union Primitive Baptist Church. He was a man who was dedicated to the philosophy that a minister should earn his keep by relying upon other than the flock. He never took a collection that I can remember when we would visit his Church.
Uncle was of the belief that the earth was flat. He chastised me once when visiting in our home. I was in Hight School and was doing a project in science and I was requidred to make a drawing of the sun and its orbiting satelites. He let me know quickly that I was headed for hell unless I changed my thinking. The "debate" extended a few seconds before mother interceded and told my good Uncle that he would have to "back off'. He was seemingly offended. I loved that man. He was one of the most interesting conversationalist whom I have known. He could discuss the most minute details of historical facts relating to personalities. As I have said on other occasions, he seemed to manifest a little resentment of those who had challenged the system and came out more affluent than he, He thought that lawyers and medical doctors were not viewed with favor by the diety. He had a brother who was a medical doctor and another who was a teacher. He thought both had avoided manual labor by going to school. In fact, he said to me that I was trying to avoid working for a living by going to school. My reply to him was that I was trying to have more options available to me by taking advantage of my opportunities. -----FHLawson
The following from MYRTLES MUSINGS, by Myrtle Aldridge, Glenn Allen, Marion Co, AL: Uncle William's first schooling was at Mcmary County, Tenn. (The current, 1997, ROAD ATLAS, by Rand McNally, Deluxe Edition, shows no McMary Co, in TN) Based upon family history, he lived in Lawrence Co, TN, for a year or more.
