- Jesse C. Sorrels, born 9/5/1843. This man lived mostly around Marion, NC area. (I think in earlier years in Rutherford County.) He married Mary Emily Lewis (5/23/1846-6/21/1912), and had ten children. The third child, first son, was William Walter Sorrels (8/31/1871-10/2/1949) who was my father. According to information I have, Jesse C. Sorrels rode horseback up into the Blue Ridge mountains where he was impressed with the plight of some of the people there. He asked the Baptist Association of North Carolina to license him as a missionary, then worked most of his active life helping people in the mountains where he started three churches. The one with which he spent most of his time was the Clear Creek Church. (Probably spent the latter years of his life there.) I tried to find this church once while in NC, but could not find a community called Clear Creek. With some research, I found that the place had been renamed Pleasant Garden. (Just NW of Marion.) Upon learning this, I visited there and the church which my grandfather started was still going. In fact, the cornerstone on their sanctuary stated, "In honor of Jesse C. Sorrels."
