- Jackson Simmons was the father of my maternal great-grandmother, Mary Ann Simmons Cox. I and a Cox 1st cousin, Donna Cox Briggs, have been into our family's genealogy for about as long as you have maybe longer. For all these years we have ( mostly Donna ) tried in vain to find Jackson's parents. How confident are you in what you have on Jackson's parents and grandparents ? In 1860 I believe he's listed as JOHN J. SEMMENS in the census of Hoggards District, Washington County, Tennessee. He is living in the household headed by a ELI RATLIFF, half-brother to his future wife, SARAH JANE RATLIFF who is part of the household headed by her brother, ROBERT. One households separates the 2 families. The census was recorded July 25, Jackson & Sarah were married the following August 30.
Jackson has been a huge mystery in our family tree. No one could figure out how he got to east Tennessee. He fought on both sides in the civil war. Beginning as a Confederate in the 3rd Maryland artillery ( joined them in Knoxville. ) He was paroled at the surrender of Vicksburg. came back home and hid out from the rebels till July 4,1864 when he joined the Union 3rd Tennessee mounted infantry. He lost his hearing in later years ( claimed in his pension it was a result of the war ) He was killed May 3,1904 in Sullivan County, Tennessee ( where I live ) He was hit by a train he obviously didn't hear. If you can access my tree on ancestry ( Land family tree ) feel free to look and see if you could use anything I have. I do have a photo of Jackson's daughter, ( my great-grandmother ) Mary Ann. If your info is correct he probably named her after a favorite sister !
