Notes |
- It is likely that Tryon is the father of Henry, but not proven that he is the father of Moses.
Tryon NICHOLAS was there in LCT in 1810 when his estate was administered by Sarah NICHOLAS and John H. MOORE. (See Lincoln Co. TN Pioneers Vol. 5 #3 & 4, page 52) In 1840 the census of LCT lists a John NICHOLAS age 20-30 with wife and 3 children living near the Katharine, the widow of James SIMMONS. I believe this could be a son of Henry NICHOLS and a grandson of Katharine SIMMONS.
The 1820 census of LCT lists Henry NICHOLS, age 26-45, the same age as Moses NICHOLS. William NICHOLS was 45+ on the same census. All on the same page as well as James SIMMONS. Henry NICHOLS had a son Tryon NICHOLS and I believe this name is the best clue to this line.
There are 2 John NICHOLS on the 1820 Census of Lincoln Co., TN. Page 12: 210010-1201. 3 are in agriculture, 2 male slaves and 5 female slaves. Page 14: 000001-00011. 2 in agriculture with 4 males slaves and 2 female slaves.
On page 26 are Moses NICHOLS: 100010-211 with 1 person in agriculture.
Page 26: William: 320001-1101 with 3 in agriculture no slaves
Page 26: right beside Henry: 110010-3201 with 2 in agriculture no slaves.
"A William Riley NICHOLS born 1814 in TN married Delia B. HUNT in Johnson Co., IL 17 Aug 1840. They had a son Louis Henry NICHOLS born May 1844 Johnson Co., IL. James NICHOLS, b 1807 NC also in Johnson Co. IL in 1850, as was some of my SIMMONS, ERVINS and WISEMAN'S who migrated there about 1836. I have a hunch these NICHOLS might be tied to the Lincoln Co. TN NICHOLS. No proof as yet, though." (PatT499578@aol.com) (2004)
There is another possibility:
John Nichols
Birth 24 Jun 1743 Leeds, Yorkshire, England
Orange Marriage 3 Jul 1788 to Sarah Stout Lytle
Death Apr 1817 Nashville, Davidson, Tennessee, USA
