  According to his Uncle Herman, Samuel Preston Jr. ran away from home about the age of 12, went to Indiana, married and had a child, both died, and he returned to TN. Age 18, living with mother in 1870 Census. He was listed in the 1880 census in Shelbyville as a widower at the age of 28, so the wife and baby who died could be true. No children were living with him. A cousin, who visited Sam and Bettie FREEMAN, said that he was a salesman in a dry goods store and walked with a limp.
