I believe that Sterling seems to have disliked his name as he often indicated himself as S. P. Sorrell. He may have also been known as Pleasan or Pleasant for a time because there is a Pleasan and Margaret J Sorril living in a Tyson household in Lancaster SC in the 1850 census.
The Eighth Census (1860) of the United States lists a Sterling P. Sorril (sic) on line 32 of page 105 of the Fifth District of Johnson County Tennessee for the Butler Post Office. This part of the census was enumerated on 3 July 1860 by James Keys. Sterling is listed as 32 years old and a miller with a value of personal estate at $180. Margaret J. is listed as 40 years old and conducting housewifery [sic] and she listed her place of birth as Alabama. There are two children listed as well - a daughter, Celia A. age 9 (place of birth North Carolina) and William H. (A.) [sic] age 8 (place of birth as South Carolina). Neither attended school in the previous year. {Source - 1860 Census transcribed from www.ancestry.com on 6 June 2002}

Sorrell, Rev. S. P., b. Jun 26, 1827, d. Oct 11, 1909, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord. A minister of the Gospel for 44 years, White marble stone standing about 4 feet above ground, Inscription facing west
D. S. Wagner recorded the death of Sterling P. Sorrell on 11 October 1910. He was listed as a widower at age 83 dying of "old age." His place of birth is listed as South Carolina and his occupation was listed as Minister. This was recorded on 25 July 1910, three months before Sterling died. One of the dates is incorrect. Suspect it is the year of death and true date may be 1909 as is reported by the family. {Source - Record of Deaths for the 11th District of Carter County Tennessee, page 31. I happened upon your posting concerning Sterling Sorrell's middle name & remembered my grandfather, Lambert Sorrell, showing me his family history notes during a visit about 12 years ago. He had recorded Sterling's middle name as Pleasant. I made a handwritten copy of his notes at the time and have it somewhere in my papers. Let me know if you would like me to mail you a copy. - Kathy Lynn Sorrells
Sterling is my GGGgrandfather and I am trying to find information on his parents. He is believed to have been born in Moore Co. NC 6/26/1827 and died in Hampton (Carter Co.) TN 10/11/1909/10. He was married to Margaret J. Tyson (6/29/1819-10/14/1892) and they had at least two children (William Albert and Celia A.). William may have been born in Lancaster SC. Any leads will be greatly appreciated.

The Sorrell Cemetery in Hampton is on Third Avenue near the High School. When my Grandfather Sorrell was still alive, he took me to see it. As I recall, it was very overgrown then. There are at least three Sorrells buried there: Sterling, his son William A. and Lucinda E (wife of William). Sterling's dates are 6-26-1827 to 10-11-1909. Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures of the stones. Will have to get them the next time I visit East Tennessee. (tellingt@adelphia.net)
Here in lies the problem. I have always been told that his middle name was Preston. I have not been able to find any documents which list his middle name, always just the P. Did find a 1850 census in Moore Co NC which lists a Pleasan (sic) Sorrell (22 yrs) and his wife Margaret (30 yrs) living in the household of Dawson Tyson. I am beginning to wonder if the middle name is Pleasant.
Grandfather of Sterling Pleasant Sorrell believed to have emigrated from France by way of England to North or South Carolina about the time of the Revolutionary War. He (Sterling?) reportedly was a fine man, well liked by everyone. {Source - Personal recollection of Lambert V. Sorrell in 1978 as told to Carole Sorrell Ellington}
