Looking for basic bio info on Ahira B. Sorrels. I'm a travel writer who came across his headstone in an abandoned mining camp cemetery in Southern Arizona. I'd like to tell my readers a bit about his life before his arrival in the Wild West.
The grave is located a distance from the others, and hidden behind tall stands of grass -- which is probably why it remains in such good condition. The Victorian headstone is lovingly carved and surprisingly expensive and ornate for a mining camp cemetery (although at one point, Harshaw was a thriving boom town).
Here is what's written on his gravestone:
Ahira B. Sorrels
Born Aug. 16, 1839
Died Dec. 6, 1907
These smaller headstones are nearby:
Freddie Lee
Son of
A.B. and Melvina Sorrells
Born Feb. 14, 1880
Died June 5, 1885
and
Bertie May
Daughter of
B. and Maud Sorrells
Born Sept. 3, 1902
Died Dec. 27, 1902
I believe Ahira lived in Crawford County, Ark. before moving west. Can anyone tell me what he did for a living, or a bit more about his life there?
