BENSON — On Jan. 1, 2005, her 90th birthday, Mrs. Lela Sorrell Miller peacefully entered
Heaven’s door with her family at her bedside. She was the sweetest person, most precious
mother, and dedicated Christian. Lela enjoyed working in her yard producing many beautiful
flowers, making chocolate fudge, peanut brittle, pecan pies and was an avid reader. Funeral
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hodges Chapel Pentecostal Free Will Baptist Church.
Officiating will be the Revs. Kelvin Blackman and Steve Morris. Burial will follow in the church
cemetery.
Mrs. Miller was born Jan. 1, 1915, in Harnett County to the late Willie Thomas and Lula Jane
Jackson Sorrell. She was preceded in death by her husband, P.O. Miller; son, Jerry T. Miller;
daughter, Judy Mae Miller; grandson, Jeffery Miller; sisters, Mildred Barnes, Naomi Massengill
and Dorothy Walton; brothers, Clyde Sorrell, W.T. Sorrell and Lentis Sorrell. She was a
homemaker and member of Hodges Chapel PFWB Church.
Survivors include, daughters and sons-in-law, Gl
oria and Charles Matthews of Swansboro, and
Sylvia and Bruce Cash of Raleigh; sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Olevia Miller of
Raleigh and S. Edward and Jackie Miller of Willow Spring; daughter-in-law and spouse, Scarlett
and Carl Von Canon of Marion, S.C.; brother,
Shirley Sorrell of Lillington; sisters, Velma
Creech of Benson, Lula Jane Messer of Erwin, Sybil Mabry of Angier and Laura Langdon of
Dunn; grandchildren, Steven Miller, Thomas Miller, Michael Miller, Nichole Manning, Travis
Cash, Kelly Cash, Lori Matthews, Beth Matthews, Tony Matthews, David Von Canon, Paul Von
Canon and Amy Von Canon; great-grandchildren, Alanah Miller and Harrison Miller; stepgreat-
grandchildren, Amber Manning, Amy Manning and Haley Matthews; special nephew and
spouse, Cecil and Deborah Massengill.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Rose & Graham Funeral Home in Benson.
Flowers are welcomed, however, memorials may be made to Lela S. Miller Memorial Fund,
