J. C. Brewer

Apr 11, 1912
Mary A. Ryals, wife of
E. Mc. Brewer
Oct 21 1824
Mar 17, 1898
(Later)

Feb 16, 1928
Laura Scott Abbott
Feb 14, 1859
Aug 31, 1937 (NOTE: The marriage record has her as "Laura Brewer.)
In the 1850 LCT census the children are: Rebeca (5), Argyle (3) and James (1).
In the 1860 LCT census the children are: Rebecca (16), Argulie (14), James (10), Mary (8), Joseph (7), John (5), Martha (3), and Susan (1).
In the 1870 LCT census the children are: James (21), Mary A. (18), Joseph (16), R. D. (15), H. A. (13), and L. C. (11).
Martha Jane Ryals' (Mary Ann Ryals' sister's) will names her niece as: "Rebecca Elizabeth Hall." And names her nephews as: "A. H. Bruer (Brewer), J. C., Joseph and Denham Bruer (Brewer).
1. I believe that John Brewer is actually John Denham Brewer. I don't know where the "R." in "R. D." comes from in 1870. But in 1860 John Brewer is listed as being 5 years old and then 10 years later he is listed as "R. D." and being 15 years old. The fact that his aunt names a nephew "Denham" means that the "D." in "R. D." has to be "Denham." Now it is possible that John Brewer has two middle names as in John R. Denham Brewer. But since none of the other children have 2 middle names, that seems unlikely. My source for the 1870 census is "The Lincoln Lineage," Vol. 8, #2, pg. 33. Maybe there is an error in the transcription?
2. I believe that the "H. A." Brewer in 1870 is "H. Arthur" Brewer. That he is the Arthur Brewer buried next to his brother (James C. Brewer) and his mother. I don't know why he is not enumerated in the 1860 census. He may have just been overlooked.
3. The "L." in "L. C." Brewer in the 1870 census could actually be an "S." for possibly Susan C. Brewer. OR, maybe the "C." is really an "S." for Laura Scott Brewer? I have not seen this family in the 1880 census to verify Susan Brewer's or Laura Brewer's middle initials. And I have not seen Alice Brewer either.
4. I checked the marriage records and located an H. U. Pettis (29) who married Henrietta A. Brewer (23) on 10 Jul 1881 in LCT. I wonder if this is actually Henrietta Alice Brewer?
