7 Apr 1906 Civil War Pension Filed 19 Apr 1906 : A total of 27 pages. His description of his wounds: wounded in the side by explosion of bomb & shot in right foot. Has been married, wife dead, family living with him: widow daughter and her three children. daughter about 30 years: her children: 6 yrss-1 year old Signed on 7 Apr 1906 (See details below.)
1907 Mortgage on horses in Marshall Co., TN from J. H. Logan valued at $250, $200, $100, $150, $160, $125
18 Dec 1908 purchased 140 acres in Marshall Co., TN, 5th District from W. B. and Lena E. Foster for $1000 paid in cash.
In his Civil War Pension application: J. W. Hastings, under deposition, says the W. H. Sorrels at the Battle of Murfreesboro, TN was wounded in the foot and was sent home and that he afterwards reported at headquarters at Shelbyville, TN ans was carried from there to Tullahoma in a wagon, and that when the army left Tullahoma, the wagons were sent away in the night, and that when the army prepared to leave in the morning, the said W. H. Sorrells wanted to go but there being no conveyance, the wagons having been sent on, that Col. Anderson who was in charge told him, the said WH Sorells that as he was unable to do duty, and wagons being gone that he would have to take care of himself. The said WH Sorrells was unable to walk without crutches.
In addition, W. J. Freeman, also under deposition, states that WH Sorrells was wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro and was sent home from said place.
Another statement, No. 8097: I did not state whether or not Mr. W. H. Sorrels was not wounded, and the disability of wounds. He was wounded in the right side and right foot. The wound does not effect him in the side so much as that of the foot, and I think that disables him a great deal being a farmer, and of his age, and chronic Rheumatism also. Would think taking all into considerion if would disable him at least more than one half of his time from manual labor, being nothing but a farmer. E. A. Davidson, MD
21 Oct 1911 W H wrote, "I still own 180 acres of land with a mortgage of $3600.00 on it. assessed at $1800. If land was sold it would not more than pay off morgage & interest." Signed W H. Sorrels 21 Oct 1911
1913 for $2750 he and 2nd wife Bettie purchased 52 acres in Marshall Co., District 5 (formerly 4th District) from W. C. WHORLEY paid $2000 in cash.( They supposedly exchanged farms.)
Jan 19, 1915 To: Jno E. Hickman, Nashville, TN. Dr Sir: Replying to your , on crutches from wound in side & foot at time of going home and not able for servise and more during war. Proof enclosed---as to indebteness -- I exchanged the farm refered to for 56 acres. and owe $750 on that. The 3600$ debt was paid in the exchange. Very truly yours W. H. Sorrels This is to certify that I hold two notes of $375 each with interest for two years. This Jan 19, 1915 Geo McAdams. Signed 19 Mar, 1915.
18 Mar 1915 Trustee of Marshall Co., TN from Lewisburg Signed statement that Mr. W. H. Sorrels, in 1912 paid taxes on 180 acres of land in this county valued at $1940 for taxes by my 1914 tax book shows that he is only assessed with 56 acres valued at $570 and no personal property.
10 Apr 1915 W P Mccants says that WH Sorrells was wounded at the battle of Murfreesboro and he saw said Sorrells being taken off the field. W. P. McCants further says that WH Sorrells made a good soldier and that he has always made a good citizen.
22 Feb 1916, Mr. WH Sorrels, We have received and filed in your case the affidavits you send a few days ago. I wish you would be examined by some reputable Doctor, and let him state in his affidavit whther in his professional opinion, the wound of your foot was serious enough to prevent you doing further military service. Tell him where you were wounded, and give him a clear opinion of the whole matter, Yours truly, Special Examiner.
20 Apr 1916, Mr. W. H. Sorrels, I see from the Trustee's certification in your application for pension that you are assessed with 180 acres of land in Marshall County valued fro taxation at $1800. Do you still own this land? If so, tell me assessment at this time and also the actual value of the land and the income derived therefrom and also your income derived at this time from any other source. What has become of the mortgage which was on your property at one time? Let me hear from you as soon as possible. Very truly yours, Special Examiner.
7 Mar 1916, Mr. WH Sorrels, I have received Dr. Hodson's certificate in your case, and will present it to the Board at the meeting which begins on the second Tuesday in April. Yours truly, Special Examiner.
9 May 1916, Mr. WH Sorrels, I wrote you on April 20th about your case asking you some questions. Instead of answering me you go to someone else and get him to write a letter which does not answer my question at all, at least not satisfactorily. you claim, so he says, that you made the facts plain, or tried to in the application. You did not make them plain, and I am afraid you did not try very hard. Now I want to say Mr. Sorrell I am doing and have been doing all I can to get your case ready for the Board to act on it, but when I write you a letter you must send me the proof I ask for, or we can do nothing. Now examine my former letter, and asnwer the questions under oath. Yours truly, Special Examiner.
25 Feb 1916: I have this day examined W H Sorrells applicant #8097, and find that the wound received at Murfreesboro, Dec 31, 1862, fractured the bones forming the arch of the right foot, and rendered him unfit for military duty then, and has always been too lame to walk with any degree of ease, and in my opinion if his recrod is correct, he is clearly entitled to a pension. Signed by S. T. Hodson, M. D.
I Henry K. Moss, Deputy Register of Said County, Marshall, make oath that there appears of record in my office interest due Book I-2 page 116 a mortgage from WH Sorrells to R. L. McDaniel for the sum of twenty five hundred dollars ($2500.00) on a tract of land situated in the 4th Civil District of Marshall County containing 165 acres more or less. Henry K. Moss
