Notes |
- We strongly believe that this is the correct connection for this line to Arris/Isiah parentage. The child of Curtis Micajah name Isiah and the father of this Isiah have the same birthyear of 1828. DNA of a known descendant does not confirm this connection! (Sherry Sorrells Finchum)

On 25 July 1881, Susan L. Bridgewater, widow of W. H. Bridgewater, deceased, made application for her homestead right.
Other papers in the file concern Arris Sorrell, deceased, and his family. Arris Sorrell died 20 December 1871. His widow was Malis Sorrell, his children were; Isiah, age 14, Rebecca age 11, Mary age 9, and William M. Sorrell age 3.
I found a typed sheet of family names and dates in my husband's papers. I don't know who wrote it, but I've been able to put together some of the relationships. If you have information on the Smiths, Sorrells, Lovelaces, Eloms, Greers, Coggins, or Romines, I would certainly appreciate your help. Thomas A. Alexander Smith

I don't know if Arris Sorrel is connected to Celia and Sterling Sorrell. The date of marriage of Arris Sorrel to Malinda Hall is 7-12-1848 in Fayette, TN.
What I suspect is that Arris is a surname of known persons who lived in Westmoreland Co., VA in 1730. There was a John Sorrell Ariss. Also, John Ariss Calles was a nephew of Spencer Ariss. Lettice Sorrell, daughter of Thomas Sorrell, was the widow of Ambrose Calles, and John Wilcocks. Lettice moved to Danville, KY after she had married Charles Buck.
I don't have an Arris Sorrel in my family (yet). But the name's you are using are very close to my family: Isaac Sorrell, b. 1827 TN or NC, d. abt. 1879 TN, Valissa Hall, b. abt. 1826 TN or NC, d. abt 1910. Children: Sarah E., Elijah, Amy Rebecca, Mary J. "Molly", Mathis H., and my branch Isaiah b. 1854 .
Isaiah was called Uncle Zay, I understand. All of this family is in Fayette County TN. It is believed that Isaiah and his family moved to Fayette County TN before 1900 from Mississippi. We have very little information about the Sorrell family and sure looking for help on them. (This is from Jo Sorrell" )

A family story suggests that the cause of death was an accident. Isaiah drove a team of horses transporting cotton bales from the cotton gin to the railroad. One day the horses got spooked and they reared up throwing him down in front of the cart/trailer and a 500 lb. cotton bale rolled onto him pinning him down. The horses started running. As they ran, one of them kicked him in the back of the head repeatedly as it ran wildly down the street. Before the horses could be stopped they had killed him by the blows to the head. (The story was originally told about his son Isiah, but his death certificate states that he died of Tuberculosis.)
