Subject: JAMES family, Sevier Co, TN
Hello Mary,
I've seen your name for quite some time (your name is sorta easy to
rememeber!) on postings on various genealogy boards. Our research paths
have never crossed, until maybe now.
I was born and grew up in Cocke Co, TN, my SHULTS ancestors were mostly
in Sevier Co, TN, but I have some research interest in most anyone who
was in either county.
For some time I've tried to find and identify the family/descendants of
Henry Romines and Mary Shults, who married in the late 1820's or early
1830's in Sevier Co. My searching for Henry and family has led me into
occasional bouts of frustration with Sevier Co, TN ROMINES research.
And that has led me off onto some other families intermarried with the
Romines; particularly the STOFFLEs, and now, the JAMES family.
John Stoffle and Hettie Collins came out of NC into Sevier Co in the
1830's. Their kids are generally listed as: 1) Elizabeth, 2) William,
3) Thomas, 4) John, 5) George mar Elizabeth ABBOTT, and 6) Margaret.
Hettie apparently died and John Stoffle was married to an Esther in the
1850 Sevier Co census.
Child no. 4, John Stoffle, supposedly first married a Nancy ROMINES.
His wife was Nancy in the 1850 Sevier census. Then he supposedly
married 2nd a Sarah JAMES. His wife was a 25-year old Sarah in the
1860 Sevier census. Also in their h/h in 1860 was a 67-year old "Milly
James", born in Virginia. Stoffle researchers, and most everyone else,
have automatically assumed that Milly was Sarah's mother.
AMELLIA "Milly" James had appeared as a h/h in Sevier Co in both 1840
and in 1850. In 1850 she was "Amillia JAMES, 54, born VA", with her
were Ananise (Ananias), 27, born Alabama(?), and Susannah, 16, b. TN.
>From your postings on the JAMES list at GENFORUM this Amellia should be
Amellia BALLARD, the widow(?) of Thomas James, yes? You have listed
the children of Thomas and Milly as 1) Alford, 2) Riley, 3) Rachel (who
married Henry ROMINES), 4) Ananias (who appears with Milly in 1850), and
5) Thomas.
You don't list the "Susannah, 16" who appears with Milly in 1850, was
she not Milly's daughter? And you don't list the "Sarah James" who
supposedly married John Stoffle. Are the STOFFLE researchers incorrect
in calling SARAH a JAMES. Or incorrect in calling her Milly's daughter?
I would really appreciate any help you can provide in solving these puzzles.
Best wishes,
Jim Shults
Knoxville, TN
The best explanation of Sarah James is that she was a daughter out of wedlock of Milly James.
