The 1900 census has Lydia James birth date as Apr 1838. The 1850 shows
her as 10 yrs old. The 1840 has her under 5 as I see it. Her home made
tombstone has B 1832 and died 1902. I am sure that was a guess. That
would not fit in anywhere. But we have to remember that the person who
made the stones did it after the fact. He made both Burrell and Lydias
at the same time. They are an exact match. He had no idea how to spell
Burrell so he rhymed it with Pearl and made it Bearl. I would imagine
that the death date is fairly accurate but I would pay no credence to
the birth date. However now we have the other dates. I think sometimes
without birth certificates families got confused. Since she got
married in 1858 either date would work. In 1900 she may have not
remembered the exact year just the month. She told the census taker
she was 62 which would make it 1838. Was just looking at the 1870
census. She said she was 30 which matches the 1850 census of 10. In
1860 Lydia and Burrell are in Falling Spring not far from Elizabeth
and Susannah. She says she is 21. She was probably born in Apr and
always had her birthday before the census. For some reason she added
two years to her age in 1880 and stuck with it in the 1900.
