- Information from the "The THORPE Family" by Hugh Buckner JOHNSTON paper obtained from Wesley JACOBS.
No early land patent uses his names as a headright, nor is there any evidence that he obtained a patent for himself, but on 13 May 1644, he was in possession of land on Lawne's Creek in James City Co(the present Surry Co) adjoining a deed of Dr. John PAWLEY to Edward WILMOT(John Bennett BODDIE, "Seventeenth Century Isle of Wight Co., VA", Richmond, 1938, pg 517). This would indicate that Thomas THORPE had sufficient means to purchase a small plantation. His subsequent activities are equally inconspicuous, but it is possible that he was a trader and kept on the move. On 13 Oct 1653, the name was used as a headright by John EARLE of Northumberland Co., on 28 Nov 1654, by John COX of Lancaster Co., on 29 Nov 1658, by John EVANS of Westmoreland Co., and on 2 Sep 1664, by John STOKELEY of Accomack Co.(Nell Marion NUGENT,"Cavaliers and Pioneers", Richmond, 1934 pg. 246,303,382, and 455).All available evidence indicates that he left at least one, and probably two other children than the 3 known.
