Military: He was mustered on 10 Jun, 1862 for the duration of the Civil War. Joshua furnished himself with a horse and served as a Private in Captain John B. Palmer's Co. (Known as the Mitchell Rangers), the North Carolina Partisan Rangers. The Partisan Rangers combined with the 60th Regiment and became the 58th Regiment, NC Infantry (State Troops) in April 1865 and the Mitchell Rangers became Company A.
