Land records indicate Richard and his wife, Melinda, sold three tracts of land to G. M. Sorrells for $200.00 on March 27, 1897. One was a tract Richard got from the state on Dec 20, 1894 (NC State Grant #571). The second tract was one Richard got from G. C. Wilson on 2 Apr 1894. The third was a tract deeded to Richard by J. W. MeClroy (trustee to Richard) on 14 Apr 1894. The total was about 200 acres. Richard and Melina were to have use of the land as long as they lived. This was recorded in Mitchell County Deed Book 31, page 232, filed Apr 19, 1897.
From Old Buncombe Co., NC Families:
Richard Sorrells was born in June 1814. He married Melinda Lonan/London, who was born in 1820. Richard was a Yancey County farmer with real estate worth $100.00 in 1850. The 1860 Federal Census showed Richard and his family living in the Spruce Pine area of Yancey County with real estate valued at $300.00 and personal property valued at $280.00. According to the agriculture schedule, Richard had twenty-five acres of improved and 125 acres of unimproved land. Also listed were machinery, two horses, three milk cows, five cattle, six swine, eighteen bushels of wheat, twenty-one bushels of rye, 150 bushels of corn, ten bushels of oats, ten pounds of tobacco, nine bushels of beans, twenty bushels of Irish potatoes, 140 pounds of butter, forty pounds of cheese, twelve gallons of molasses, forty dollars worth of manufactured goods, and $49.00 worth of slaughtered animals.
Richard was 48 years old when he volunteered for service in the Confederate Army. On July 11, 1861, he was enrolled as Private in Company I, 29th NC State Troops from Mitchell County. Richard was discharged and received his last payment on 22 October 1862.
Richard was living with his family in the Grassy Creek Section of Mitchell County on the August 15, 1870 Census. He was a farmer with $100 worth of real estate and $150 in personal property. Richard had thirty improved and 120 wooded acres of land. He raised rye, Indian corn, and tobacco.
Richard and Melinda had at least eight children.
On July 30, 1901, Richard Sorrells, age 87 of Spruce Pine, Mitchell Co., NC, applied for a confederate pension. He applied for the pension because of an injury he received while serving in the army. In October of 1862, while he was near Cumberland Gap, TN, a timber fell on his left hand. From this he contracted erysipelas (infection of the skins with streptococci) in his left hand. The application was signed with an "X".
