- Joseph Essex SORRELL married Hannah. Joseph Essex died in 1773 in Essex County, VA. His estate was probated in 1773 in Essex County, VA. (In the will of Cornelius Sale of Caroline it mentions his daughter, Hannah Sorrell, presumably the wife of Joseph, although of course, not necessarily. Please note that the wife of John Sorrell, a Baptist was an Elizabeth Sale, parents unknown.)
The family of Joseph Sorrell is established directly from his will of 1773, recorded in Essex County, VA. It names Hannah, his wife and the four children shown. It also suggests, somewhat inconclusively, that in 1765, when the will was written, none of the children were married. He states in the will: ".....in the case any of my children before mentioned should die before they marry or have issue of their body, my will and desire is that child's part should be equally divided amongst the rest of my children then living."
From the General Index to Wills, 1717-1903, there was only one Sorrell entry from Will Book- dated 1762-1774
1773- Joseph Sorrell left to wife Hannah, and "my four children, Elizabeth Sorrell,Mary Sorrell, Reuben Sorrell and John Sorrell. Reuben and John were appointed as executors, indicating that both were adults in 1773.
Hannah died after 1773.
Known children of Joseph Essex Sorrell and Hannah are as follows:
i. John SORRELL.
ii. Elizabeth SORRELL.
iii. Mary SORRELL.
iv. Reuben SORRELL. In 1785 in Loudoun County, VA a Reuben Sorrell left a will leaving all to his children but did not name any of them. Nor did Reuben of Loudoun mention a wife in this will leading me to believe he may have been a widower. Since I have never found Reuben, the son of Joseph in any Essex record except the 1773 will of his father, Joseph Sorrell, I speculate that this Reuben of Loudoun may be the Reuben Sorrell of Essex. I have no evidence that this may be true but on the other hand I have found no Reuben in any other place. In 1782 there was a Reuben Sorrell paying PPT in Prince William County, next door to Loudoun which may also be this Reuben.
