Notes |
- From the Marshall CO., Historical Quarterly, #4, Winter 1975 GEORGE L. LEONARD Born 1790, died after 1850, was the son of Samuel LEONARD and the younger brother of Thomas and Robert LEONARD. (This statement is confusing as Thomas & Robert where the younger brothers of Samuel not George JWM)
Samuel Leonard remained in S.C. He had two sons: George L. and Samuel and two daughters: Elizabeth and Belinda. George L. and his sisters came to Tennessee with their uncle and aunt. George L. married (1) Susannah CALAHAN
in S.C.. and she died in Tennessee. He then married (2) Mary Ann GILBERT, daughter of Rev. John GILBERT of Lincoln CO., Tennessee 27 Jul 1826. Some say he moved from Petersburg about 1838 to Dallas CO., Texas: it would seem
from other records that he moved after 1843.It does not say who wrote the above.

An article in The Dallas Morning News on May 12, 1946, said, "One mossy stone is that of George Leonard, born in 1789, who brought his family into the Texas wilds at the age of 54 to settle the Leonard survey and pass on before Fort Sumter."
Parents: Samuel William Leonard (1765-1811)
Miss Lawan (1764-bef 1810)

George Lawan LEONARD was born on January 11, 1789 in Pendleton Dist., South Carolina. He moved with his sisters and their uncle and aunt in 1806 to Lincoln Co., Tennessee. George laid out Petersburg, Tennessee, whose land he owned, and set up a cotton gin and began the first mercantile trade firm of the town. On February 12, 1811, George was named executor of the will of his father in Pendleton Dist., South Carolina. George served as a War of 1812 soldier in Capt. Edwin L. Moore's Co. of Tennessee Militia, having volunteered at Fayetteville, Tennessee.
He appeared on the census in 1820, 1830 and 1840 in Lincoln Co., Tennessee. After the death of his first wife in about 1825, he married Mary Ann, daughter of Rev. John Gilbert, on July 27, 1826 in Petersburg, Lincoln, Tennessee. On July 9, 1829, George was named executor of the will of his uncle Colin Campbell. He appeared on the census in 1840 in Lincoln Co., Tennessee. George is on the 1842 tax list in Marshall Co., Tennessee, dist. 4, with 230 acres valued at $1310. He was apparently still in Marshall Co. by August 27, 1842, when his infant son was buried in the Leonard cemetery, but that the family definitely arrived in Dallas in December, 1843, one of the first 12 families to settle there. George is on the 1846 poll list in Dallas Co., Texas. He appeared on the census on November 15, 1850 in Dallas Co., Texas.
George left an 1812 service record filed with the NARA, showing that he appeared before Judge Allen Bland in Dallas Co., Texas, in 1850, to make affidavit regarding his service. He died on October 3, 1854 in Dallas Co., Texas and was buried in Oak Cliff Cemetery, Dallas Co., Texas. In 1856, his widow appeared in Dallas Co. court and assigned bounty land to Tom M. Hart of Madison Co., Illinois. In 1879, his widow appeared in Dallas Co. court to appoint Grafton and Ladd her attorneys. Son W. C. Leonard helped her sign her name. A. M. Cochran, postmaster of Dallas, testified he had known her for 35 years. She stated that at her husband's death, she had given all his papers to John M. Crockett, aged 61, who had known her for 31 years.
