Before she married John she was married to Edwin Ruthbin Hale. He was a Rebel in the Civil war, serving under Sibly's brigade (5th Texas mounted Calvary). He fought and won lots of battles before he was captured in New Orleans Louisiana. Mary was the nurse that cared for him. They fell in love. He was then traded out of capture. They were married in Bastrop Texas. Her father did not think him fit to be her husband because he walked with a limp. Then they moved to New Iberia Louisiana where they lived on Douperior St. and Bayou Tesche (We just sold the house). They had 2 children Stephen and Elizabeth. Edwin passed away shortly after Elizabeth was born. She lived with her parents after his death. She then remarried Your Grandfather. I did not realize that she had any more children after that. Mary is buried in Rosehill Cemetery in New Iberia, Louisiana along with her Mother (Minerva), Thomas, an unmarked grave and the rest of my family.
