Transcription Gazette & Banner [Lexington, Virginia] Wednesday, July 10,1867
On Wednesday last [3 July 1867], James C. Wilson, Wm. Sorrells, Sr., Thomas Sorrells, I.Sorrells, D Hendricks, whites, and a freedman, were struck by lightning while engaged in harvesting on the farm of Mr. Wilson on North Buffalo. Wm. Sorrells was killed. Mr. Wilson and the freedman seriously, and the others slightly injured.
Mr. W. and the freedman, we learn, are improving, and are now thought to be in a fair way of recovery.
On the same day we were visited by a storm of rain and hail accompanied by a heavy wind, which injured many fruit and shade trees, blowing up some by the roots, and twisting off the tops and branches of others.
The lightning struck in several places in and near the tow, but fortunately no one was injured.
