Notes |
- Catherine (Engle) Bereyle headstone
An article by Bill Theriault in the “Spirit of Jefferson," January 28, 1988 suggested that the tombstone of Katrina Bierlin (originally found in Melchor Engle private graveyard near Harpers Ferry but now in a museum in Charleston, WV) actual might have marked the grave of Catharine (Engle) Beyerle, Melchor Engle's mother. The alleged death date of 1707 (now unreadable) may have been 1757. "Beyerle" and "Bierlin" probably both reflect regional pronunciations of the High German word "Bäuerlein." Descendants of John Michael Beyerle spell their family name in a variety of ways now, indicating that the name's spelling wasn't rigidly fixed.Any thoughts on this subject would be read (by me) with interest.**copied from BB Posted by Peter Schroeder**
