Stanley Sorrell, 85, of Middletown, died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Willow Knoll Retirement Community.
He was born in Frenchburg, Ky. on Jan. 25, 1919, to parents James Lee and Mary (Kendal) Sorrell.
Sorrell was a 1939 graduate of Monroe High School. He was owner/operator of Sorrells Grocery and Meat Market, and Stan Sorrell Real Estate and Auctioneering. He served his country in the U.S. Army as a first lieutenant. He was considered one of the most decorated soldiers of World War II, from Middletown, having been awarded 23 medals and citations, including 14 battle decorations, two Silver Stars, five Bronze Stars and three Purple Hearts. He received an officer’s commission in 1944. He was called back into service for the Korean War.
Stan was a charter member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 131 and served as state commander for the Disabled American Veterans 1976-1977. He was Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3809 commander 1966-1967, and American Legion Post 218 commander 1969-1970. He was a Middletown City Commissioner for 12 years.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Gertrude (Rettig) Sorrell; four children, R. Michael (Wendy) Sorrell of Middletown, Stephen (Linda) Sorrell of Pensacola, Fla., formerly of Hamilton, Debra (Ronald) Rose of Trenton, and Charles Sorrell of Madison Township; a sister, Lillian (Roy) Hess of Miamisburg; a brother, Kenneth Sorrell of Trenton; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers and sisters, Edith Smith, Chalmer Sorrell, Norma Stegmiller, Stanton Sorrell, and James Sorrell.
ARRANGEMENTS: Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 6, at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. at Bonita Drive, with Pastor Kenneth Tye officiating. Visitation is today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be at Woodside Cemetery.
