Rockbridge County News, 8 Feb 1906-Thomas J. Sorrels Dead at 82.
Thomas J. Sorrels, the veteran road overseer of Lexington District, breathed his last at 1 o'clock yesterday morning at his home on the Brushy Hills. He was taken sick several weeks ago and his case was at one time pronounced pneumonia, but he improved and Saturday night was stricken with a severe stroke of paralysis, which resulted in his death. He had passed the 82nd milestone of life and enjoyed remarkable vigor of mind and body until his last illness. More than 20 years ago he undertook the work of a road overseer for Lexington district, and so efficient and satisfactory was his service that finally the whole road work of the district was placed in his hands. It was done with an efficiency that never called forth anything but words of approval and caused him just pride. He was an interesting character and a man of truth and integrity; and importation to this side from Tuckahoe, having been born in Amherst and came to Rockbridget in his youth to aid in the culture of tobacco, then much more common here than now. Later he burned charcoal at old Lucysalline furnace beyond North Mountain. During the Civil War he saw some service as a member of Company E in that crack Regiment, the Twenty-fifth Virginia infantry. Much of his life was devoted to farming.
Mr. Sorrels was twice married, in both instances he married a Miss Sorrels. He had for a long time been a widower. Tow children survive him by his first marriage and seven by the last. The latter all live in Rockbridge. They are Messers Jeffrson, William and Leech Sorrels, Mrs. William Flint, Mrs. John Mays, Mrs. Harry Mackey, and Miss Susan Sorrels.
He was buried yesterday afternoon in the Lexinton Cemetery, Rev. Dr. Charles Manly officiating at the services.
