Notes |
- From Virginia Freeman's book.
"When Moses McWhorter (brother of John of Oglethorpe) died in Logan Co., Ky in 1819 he named as his heirs his brothers, John of Oglethorpe Co., GA, James of Lincoln Co., TN, and a sister, Jean Dobson, wife of Henry Dobson of Williamson Co., TN. Apparently Moses had no children.
After Alexander, the youngest brother of John McWhorter of Oglethorpe, died in NC, John, gave a quit claim deed in1826 to a Mr. Simonton, acting as one of the heirs of Alexander McWhorter; Moses McWhorter was administrator of the Will; the papers were destroyed by fire."
Alexander, perhaps the eldest child, never came to North America. It is reported that he was educated for the Presbyterian ministry, spending two years at the University of Edinburgh. At least one McWhorter resource has suggested that it was at the "solicitation" of Alexander that Hugh came to North America. It is said that he died just prior to the birth of his younger brother in 1734 and that this brother was named Alexander in his memory.
