- In 1704, Thomas and Daniel Coleman were in King & Queen, and a Robert in Essex. Daniel is not certainly identified, but Thomas & Robert were brothers, and sons of Robert Coleman of Abingdon Parish, Gloucester Co. The Colemans were numerous in Tidewater, VA, even at an early date, but nearly all of them claim descent from Henry Coleman, who was in Elizabeth City Co., by 1632; He is supposed to have been the grandfather of Robert of Gloucester, who was a son of Richard & Rebecca (Claiborne) Coleman. The latter Robert Coleman of King & Queen had a son named Richard, as well as Thomas & others.(Source: Allan L. Poe, Box 111, Lenoir, NC.)

Sir James Coleman of Braxton, Mango, England was the father of our first Virginia ancestor, whose name was Richard Coleman.
At an early date Richard Coleman obtained a grant of land in the Northern Neck of Virginia.
On May 6, 1651 obtained 320 acres on the North side of the Rappahanock River.

History of Caroline Co., Va:
John Coleman, son of Sir James Coleman, Braxton, Mango, England settled in Fairfax Co in 1640 and married a Miss Hawes of King William Co., Va.
It appears that Sir James Coleman of England had three sons in Colonial Va.
