- John W. STRANGE is referenced in Book XII, Strange of the Carolinas.
"Strange of Rowan arose in Virginia, from James Strange (1728-1785), and its branches relocated to North Carolina, Tennessee, and Missouri. John W. Strange (1791-1850) gave birth to Strange of Jefferson and Moniteau, and that line gave rise to Strange of Bagnell, founded by Francis Marion Strange (1856-1935)."
He is listed in paragraph 11 on this webspage:http://www.arapacana.com/Prefaces/pref_12.htm
STRANGE, GARNER

I know that my ancestor JOHN W. STRANGE JR. and his wife SARAH ELIZABETH GARNER were married in Dandridge. Jefferson co., TN, on March 26, 1854. I have three problems. JOHN W. STRANGE has ten siblings of which we only know the three that immigrated to MO. by 1856. His father was JOHN W. STRANGE SR. and mother REBECCA (SLAVENS). The were in the Cocke Co. census in 1830. This is where JOHN W. STRANGE JR. was born in 1832. His wife SARAH ELIZABETH GARNER is suppose to have been born in TN too. Her brother's name could be JESSE GARNER who married JOHN W. STRANGE JR.'S sister ZILPHIA STRANGE. I would appreciate any info on the GARNER, STRANGE, and the SLAVEN family if possible. poliwogsis@webtv.com (1999)
"John W. and Sarah E. Strange arrived in MO between Dec. 1856 and Jan. 1858, for in the 1860 census of Moniteau County MO shows John W. Strange, 28, his wife Sarah E. 27, Francis M. 4 all born in TN, and William H. 2 born in MO. They were
living on a farm near the junction of 87 and 179 highways near Jamestown, Moniteau, MO. I have not been able to find where there was a deed recorded to John W. Strange in Moniteau County MO, so I do not know whether they owned this farm or
not. They were still living in Moniteau County, MO in 1870 but were living in Miller County MO in 1880, where all the children grew up and all of them married except Daniel Fletcher."

I believe that John W. and Rebecca (Unknown maiden name) Strange had a daughter named Zilphia born about 1826 in Tenn., married 29 Nov. 1846 in Jefferson County, Tenn. to Jesse Garner born about 1828 in NC, and I am told that Sarah E. Garner Strange had a brother named Jesse, so I wonder if John W. Strange did not marry a sister of Jesse Garner.
I believe that James, and John W. Strange Sr. were brothers. When I was in Jefferson County, TN in 1986 I talked to a Mrs. Helen Strange Cotton who had been researching the James Strange family, and she thinks they were brothers also, but we have not been able to prove this yet. One of the problems is that all the records in the Cocke, TN were destroyed before 1870, so there are no Court records there to check for marriages, etc., and that is where John M. Strange lived in the 1830 census, and probably his children were married there. lisamahaney@psc.state.mo.us (2004)
They were evidently cousins rather than brothers! (Sherry S. Finchum)
From John Mayer's book:
I certainly have a fair amount of information on John W. Strange, Sr. 1791-after 1850. He is listed as having 11, perhaps 12 children. Zilphia is one of them and it does say that Jesse Garner was the brother of Sarah Elizabeth Garner who married John W. Strange, Jr.
It lists John W. Strange, Sr.'s father as John Strange, 1751-1810 and his father as James Strange [I] 1728-1785.
