William Flinchum, 1888, Stokes Co., NC Will Book #6, p 208. 5200.90.275 written on 13 Apr 1877 and recorded on 19 Sep 1888 in Stokes Co., NC. Names his wife as sole beneficiary and executrix. A John S. Flinchum attests to being a witness.
This may be a dead end as I believe her father was William Flinchum. I'm wondering if he was related to Robert Flinchum.
My research also indicates that the FLINCHUMS were, generaly, not slave owners. Since they were Primitive Baptists (as opposed to Quakers), I assumed that they were probably small farmers. Viney FLINCHUM was born in 1825, long before the FLINCHUMS began to prosper. I'm still trying to figure out how a black woman acquired the surname. She must have been the first black FLINCHUM (and possibly part of the only black FLINCHUM family), because the others that I've found are all younger and few and far between. By 1870, those other black FLINCHUMS lived in Surry County, while Viney is listed on that year's Census Schedule as living with her son, Peter JESSUP, in Quaker Gap.This is what I know about Viney Flinchum
1825 - Born, Martin Lime Kiln, Stokes County, NC
1860 - Living in Surry, Mount Airey, NC, Slave Owner William Flinchum
1870 - Living in Stokes County with son Peter Jessup and his family in Quaker Gap
1880 - Living in Surry County as Servant in household of William and Mary Polly Flinchum
