  Living in Monterey Park, CA in 1931. "My grandfather, James Evans REESE, was a pressman. A printing press fell over on him, and crushed his leg. The leg had to be amputated due to gangrene. While in the hospital, he met his wife, Elizabeth May PARRY, who was his nurse. According to Elizabeth, all the nurses were interested in James because he was a 'handsome devil', but she was the one he asked out. On their first date they were to meet at a certain corner. She showed up at the appointed time, but James wasn't there, so she left. Later she found out that he was in a store nearby bragging to the clerk that she would wait for him. In my grandparent's house was an old cane seated wheelchair, left over from Grandpa's recuperation. This, and Grandpa's wooden leg were among our favorite play things at Grandpa's house. We liked to knock on his leg to hear the hollow sound. Grandpa also had false teeth, and he would let the top plate drop down and growl at us. We would all scream. We called it 'Do the tiger, Grandpa!' I have a copy of his death certificate. It shows his parents as Jeremiah F. REESE and Pinetty NEECE. Apparently after James came to California he had no contact with any of his family except for his brother Jess.
