I know that my ancestor JOHN W. STRANGE JR. and his wife SARAH ELIZABETH GARNER were married in Dandridge. Jefferson Co., TN, on March 26, 1854. I have three problems. JOHN W. STRANGE has ten siblings of which we only know the three that immigrated to MO. by 1856. His father was JOHN W. STRANGE SR. and mother REBECCA (SLAVENS). The were in the Cocke Co. census in 1830. This is where JOHN W. STRANGE JR. was born in 1832. His wife SARAH ELIZABETH GARNER is suppose to have been born in TN too. Her brother's name could be JESSE GARNER who married JOHN W. STRANGE JR.'S sister ZILPHIA STRANGE. I would appreciate any info on the GARNER, STRANGE, and the SLAVEN family if possible.

from Descendants of John W. Strange book by Gaylord Strange, pg. 12
"John W. and Sarah E. Strange arrived in MO between Dec. 1856 and Jan. 1858, for in the 1860 census of Moniteau County MO shows John W. Strange, 28, his wife Sarah E. 27, Francis M. 4 all born in TN, and William H. 2 born in MO. They were living on a farm near the junction of 87 and 179 highways near Jamestown, Moniteau, MO. I have not been able to find where there was a deed recorded to John W. Strange in Moniteau County MO, so I do not know whether they owned this farm or not. They were still living in Moniteau County, MO in 1870 but were living in Miller County MO in 1880, where all the children grew up and all of them married except Daniel Fletcher.
I believe that they came to Missouri in a covered wagon pulled by a yoke of oxen, for in March 1859 John W. borrowed $50 from a Mark Renfrow giving a yoke of oxen for security, and I have been told that Francis Marion (Gaylord's grandfather) was born in a covered wagon while on the road to MO."
Lisa's note: John and Sarah Elizabeth's last child was born ca 1883 but John is not listed with the family in the 1870 and 1880 census. Was he away from home at the time, or dead?

Comments: I'm looking for information on Leah Slayton (Slaton, Slayden). She was born in 1862 or 1863. We think she was born in Jefferson Co, Tn. She was married 3 times- Andrew Williams, John W. Strange, and James Lane. She also lived in Knox Co as an adult. She died in Knox Co and was buried there. She is a cousin of Leah Hart Thornhill. Family legend says that Leah Slayton was 1/4th Cherokee. She may have had a sister whose first name was Cindy who also married a Williams and 2 half sisters whose last name may have been Schubert.
