Minnie Irene Sorrell Highley, 81, of West Lafayette, died Thursday morning, Aug. 13, 2009, in Rosewalk Village.
She was born in Prickly Ash, Ky., on Nov. 14, 1927, she had lived in the Fairdale area of Louisville, Ky., and moved from Louisville to West Lafayette recently.
Paul Highley, her husband, died in 1977.
She had been a Sunday school teacher at Parkside Community Christian Church, supported her children's Boy and Girl Scout troops, the Minors Lane Elementary School Library and Fairdale Community Club. Her hobbies including gardening, NASCAR and traveling. She was an avid reader and student of the Bible and Civil War history.
Surviving are daughters, Winona Sharon Sproles (husband: G. Douglas) of West Lafayette and Veronica Highley Lapp (husband: Andrew) of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and a brother, Silas Sorrell of Muncie.
Also surviving are 7 grandchildren, Kelly and William Highley of Fairdale, Ky., Madeline Rae Baker of Kalamazoo, Mich., Andrew Sproles of West Lafayette, Jessie Baker of Tempe, Ariz., Adena Sproles of Houston, Texas, and Margaret Bachelder (husband: Isaac) stationed in Norfolk, Va., with the Navy; a great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Paul Scott Highley in 2007, and many other brothers, sisters, parents and family members.
Visitation 2-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, with service at 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17, 2009, at Nunnelley Funeral Home, Taylor Blvd., Louisville, Ky., Pastor Mike Bradford officiating. Interment Rest Haven Memorial Park, Louisville.
