Betty's Obituary
Betty Lou Johnson, age 86, passed away peacefully in her bed on the morning of February 27, 2021. She was born February 9, 1935 in Calipatria, California to Loyd and Gertrude Smith.
She was the beloved wife of Louis Johnson, devoted husband of 60 years, and together they raised three children: Bradley Johnson, Scott Johnson and Jill Henn (nee Johnson). She treasured her children and her four grandchildren, Claire Henn, Zachary Henn, Owen Johnson and Caleb Johnson. She is profoundly missed by her family.
Betty met Lou in Manhattan Beach where they married at the Wayfarers Chapel in Portuguese Bend, California. That resulted in a 60 year marriage and three children. From there, they embarked on a journey that would take them from the beaches of Los Angeles, to the mountains of Santa Cruz, the bustle of Silicon Valley, the quiet alpine valleys of the Sierra Nevadas, the lights of Reno and finally to the deserts of Arizona. In each new home, she made wonderful, life-long friends, found new hobbies, and continued to focus her life on raising her three children.
Betty was the embodiment of the dedicated mother, embracing every moment she spent with them throughout their lives. She was always active in all of their activities, providing love, support and understanding. She remains a role model and inspiration to each of the children, and they could not have asked for a more loving, attentive and dedicated mom.
Always a joy to be around, Betty attracted wonderful friends throughout her life who shared her energy and love of life and learning new things. Naturally athletic, she enjoyed, and excelled, in recreational sports. When she and Lou moved to Reno, Nevada, she became passionate about the Little Theatre, fiction writing, painting and charity. She played the piano and would get swept away by music, from classical to pop. There wasn’t a movie she didn’t enjoy. After the kids graduated from university, Betty caught the travel bug, and found herself exploring London, Paris and other locales the small town girl had only dreamed of.
She loved dogs as much as dogs loved her. Her first was Tappy, a basset hound that came along just prior to the birth of her first son, Bradley. Deiter, and then Timo, her schnauzers were faithful canine companions later in life, accompanying her on walks at her and Lou’s homes in Santa Clara, Graeagle and then Reno.
Betty could spend hours in conversations with her friends and family. She was truly a “people person” and always saw the good in others. In Reno, she worked with several charity organizations and her compassion, empathy and peaceful presence brought comfort to those around her. Her energy, zest for life and sense of humor made her a fun companion for her family and friends.
She will be missed by all who knew her...but she will be remembered even more as a mother and loving wife.
