Samuel Gann(IV) was born 1795 in Clarke County, Georgia, the second child of Samuel Gann(III) and Mary Hambrick Gann. His father died when Samuel(IV) was young. He and his siblings, Martha, William J. and Margaret F. and their mother probably lived next to his grandfather, Nathan Gann(I) since the household of his mother, Mary Gann, a widow, was enumerated there in the 1820 census. His mother entered the 1820 Georgia Land Lottery as a widow and won land in Hall County in a lucky draw. Samuel(IV) married Sarah "Sallie" Lee, daughter of Wyatt Lee and his second wife, Dolly Grant Lee, on December 3, 1821, in Clarke County, Georgia. They lived near her family in Clarke County south of Athens near the township of Watkinsville on land that may have been his father's and perhaps even his grandfather, Narhan Gann(I)'s The area fell in the county of Oconee when it was created in 1875.
Sarah's name is noted as a member of the Mars Hill Baptist Church in an old minutes book of the church.
