Samuel Gann(III), son of Nathan Gann(I) and his wife Elizabeth Eastin Gann, was born in Halifax County, Virginia. By 1770, his family had moved into the wilderness area of North Carolina. His father served in the local militia and when the unrest over taxation and representation reached them, he joined the cause of freedom and fought in The Southern Theater during the Revolutionary War. After the war, Samuel(III)'s family migrated to land in the interior of Georgia. They settled in Greene County, a large area of virgin land. Their land was in Clarke County when it was created from Greene. Samuel(III) married Mary Hambrick and they had four children when he died in 1804. His widow continued to lived on land near her in-laws and raised their children.
